Newark, N.J. — The Detroit Red Wings opened their four-game road trip with a strong defensive effort Sunday night, shutting out the New Jersey Devils 3–0 at Prudential Center.

Goaltenders John Gibson and Cam Talbot combined for 31 saves, while Dominik Shine scored the first goal of his NHL career to help Detroit snap a two-game losing streak. The victory also ended New Jersey’s four-game winning streak.

Gibson handled the majority of the workload early, stopping 21 shots through the first two periods. However, the veteran netminder was forced to leave late in the second after a collision in the crease. Talbot stepped in for the final period and turned aside all 10 shots he faced to preserve the shutout.

The performance marked the first time two Red Wings goaltenders combined for a shutout since Jonas Gustavsson and Jimmy Howard accomplished the feat in 2014.

Detroit wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Defenseman Moritz Seider opened the scoring just 3:20 into the first period, beating Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom with a wrist shot.

The Red Wings extended their lead in the second period when James van Riemsdyk tipped in a shot from the point on the power play at the 6:37 mark.

Shine added an insurance goal midway through the third period, snapping a shot past Markstrom with 9:36 remaining. The 32-year-old forward was playing in just his fifth NHL game of the season and the 14th of his career, making the milestone moment even more memorable. Seider and van Riemsdyk both assisted on the goal.

Detroit also saw defenseman Justin Faulk make his debut with the team after being acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Blues on Friday.

Markstrom finished with 27 saves for New Jersey, which was playing the fourth game of a seven-game homestand. The Devils entered the night riding momentum after a 6–3 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday, a game highlighted by Jack Hughes’ hat trick.
