Bronx, NY—–Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is proud to present STEP AFRIKA! on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 4:00 PM. Experience an electrifying afternoon of rhythm, movement, and cultural storytelling as one of the world’s leading dance companies brings the art of stepping to life on stage.
Step Afrika! was founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping and has grown into the world’s leading authority on the art form. Under Williams’ leadership, stepping has evolved into one of America’s most dynamic cultural exports, with the company touring more than 60 countries across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Recognized as one of the top African American dance companies in the United States, Step Afrika! serves as Washington, D.C.’s official Cultural Ambassador.
Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles rooted in historically African American fraternities and sororities with traditional Western African and Southern African dance forms and contemporary movement to create a powerful and cohesive artistic experience. Performances go far beyond dance, incorporating song, storytelling, humor, and audience participation. The result is an engaging and immersive performance filled with precision, athleticism, and high-energy intensity that leaves audiences exhilarated.
Committed to arts education and community engagement, Step Afrika! reaches tens of thousands of students each year through programs emphasizing teamwork, discipline, and cross-cultural understanding.

The company’s work has been featured at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and it holds a Guinness World Records title for the largest stepping dance. Step Afrika! has also performed at the White House, including for Barack Obama’s Black History Month Reception, and in 2023 became the first dance company inducted into the National Association for Campus Activities Hall of Fame.
