Ashburn, VA—–The Washington Commanders have spent decades searching for sustained success since their last Super Bowl title in 1991. That drought began to feel like it might finally end when quarterback Jayden Daniels burst onto the scene in 2024, leading the franchise to its first conference championship appearance in nearly 30 years. His emergence reignited optimism across the organization and gave fans a glimpse of a brighter future.

That momentum, however, didn’t carry over into 2025. Injuries on both sides of the ball derailed the season, and Washington stumbled to a 5–12 record. The disappointing campaign forced general manager Adam Peters and the front office to reassess the roster and make meaningful changes during the offseason.

Early returns suggest progress, but the job is far from complete.

According to FOX Sports analyst Ralph Vacchiano, the Commanders are among the teams best positioned to make a playoff leap—if they capitalize on the 2026 NFL Draft. He ranked Washington among the top five losing teams with the potential to reach the postseason, citing their need for immediate-impact talent.

Draft outlook

Round 1: No. 7 overall

Round 3: No. 71

Round 5: No. 147

Round 6: No. 187, No. 209

Round 7: No. 223

With limited early-round capital, the Commanders must be precise with their top selections.

 Areas of need

While Daniels’ health played a major role in last season’s struggles, the issues ran deeper. The offense lacked consistent explosiveness, and the defense was among the league’s weakest units.

Washington addressed part of the problem in free agency by investing heavily on defense. If those additions pay off, the draft can be used to inject playmaking ability on offense.

One priority stands out: finding a reliable receiver to complement Terry McLaurin. At 30 years old, McLaurin remains productive, but the team needs another dynamic target to ease the burden and elevate the passing game.

Holding the No. 7 pick gives Washington a strong opportunity to land that kind of weapon. However, if the front office opts to go defense early—particularly if a prospect like Sonny Styles is available—they would likely need to wait until the third round to address wide receiver, which carries more risk.

The path forward

Despite last season’s record, the Commanders are not far from contention. Improved health, coaching adjustments, and defensive upgrades already position them for a bounce-back year.

Ultimately, the 2026 draft could be the turning point. If Peters can deliver another strong class—similar to when he landed Daniels and uncovered late-round value—the Commanders could quickly transition from rebuilding to competing in the NFC.

The margin for error is small, but the opportunity is significant.
