East Rutherford, N.J. — Erling Haaland continues to rewrite Norwegian football history.

The prolific striker scored twice in the second half Sunday night to power Norway to a stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil in the Round of 16 at MetLife Stadium, securing the country’s first-ever appearance in a FIFA World Cup quarterfinal.

With the win, Norway’s remarkable World Cup run continues, fueled by the relentless scoring touch of its superstar forward.

Haaland’s latest two-goal performance also intensified the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot. The Manchester City striker now has seven goals, drawing level with Lionel Messi of Argentina and Kylian Mbappé of France atop the scoring charts. Messi, however, has played one fewer match than both Haaland and Mbappé.

The breakthrough finally came in the 79th minute.

Substitute Andreas Schjelderup delivered a perfectly placed cross into the penalty area, where the towering 6-foot-5 Haaland rose above Brazil’s defense and powered a header into the back of the net, giving Norway a 1-0 lead and sending thousands of Norwegian supporters into celebration.

Just when Brazil pushed forward searching for an equalizer, Haaland delivered the knockout blow.

In the 90th minute, Schjelderup once again found his star striker near the top of the penalty area. Haaland calmly struck a powerful left-footed shot into the lower-right corner of the goal, doubling Norway’s advantage and all but securing one of the biggest victories in the nation’s football history.

Brazil managed to pull one goal back in stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty kick, but it proved to be nothing more than a late consolation as Norway held on for the memorable win.

Following his second goal, Haaland celebrated with his trademark confidence, lifting his jersey before staring into the crowd with little emotion—a familiar sight during a tournament in which he has consistently delivered in the biggest moments.

The performance continued an extraordinary World Cup campaign for the Norwegian striker, who also scored a dramatic late winner against Ivory Coast to send his country into the knockout stage and previously netted twice against Senegal earlier in the tournament.

After the final whistle, Haaland admitted the magnitude of the moment was almost impossible to comprehend.

“I couldn’t quite believe it,” he said. “I dreamed about playing in the World Cup with Norway and helping us qualify, but I never imagined beating Brazil. It’s unreal. I still have to pinch myself because it feels like a dream.”

He also reflected on what the victory means for football in his homeland.

“I’ve said it before—we’re changing our nation,” Haaland said. “The way we played tonight shows Norway belongs among the best teams in Europe and in the world. What this group has accomplished is incredible. I’m proud of my country, proud of this team, and proud of everyone who has believed in us.”

The atmosphere inside MetLife Stadium shifted dramatically after Haaland’s opening goal. Although Brazilian supporters heavily outnumbered Norway’s fans before kickoff, the celebrations from the Norwegian contingent echoed throughout the stadium as their team moved one step closer to an unimaginable World Cup title run.

For Brazil, the defeat marked a disappointing end to another championship quest. For Norway, it was the greatest victory in the nation’s football history.

And as the tournament heads into the quarterfinals, Erling Haaland isn’t just leading Norway’s historic charge—he is firmly in the hunt to become the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s Golden Boot winner.
