Tuscaloosa, AL. — Keelon Russell made an impressive first impression as Alabama’s starting quarterback, accounting for 335 total yards and two touchdowns as No. 13 Alabama cruised past East Carolina, 48-10, in Saturday’s season opener.
Making his first career start after winning the quarterback competition with Austin Mack during preseason camp, Russell displayed the combination of arm strength and mobility that convinced Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer to hand him the keys to the offense.
The sophomore completed his first start with 249 passing yards and added 86 yards rushing, including a touchdown on the ground.
Russell wasted little time showcasing his ability as a runner. During Alabama’s opening possession, he escaped pressure and took off for a 23-yard gain, immediately giving the Pirates’ defense another dimension to worry about.
“He’s just a tough guy to defend,” DeBoer said. “I thought he took advantage of his ability.”
Russell directed Alabama to points on five consecutive possessions to begin the game as the Crimson Tide quickly established control.
Alabama finished with 480 total yards and converted that production into 27 first downs. The Crimson Tide also ran the ball effectively, producing 227 yards on the ground after ranking near the bottom of the SEC in rushing a season ago.
Coleman-Williams Bounces Back
Ryan Coleman-Williams emerged as Russell’s primary target, finishing with 130 receiving yards.
His afternoon wasn’t completely smooth, however. Coleman-Williams dropped two passes during the second quarter before responding with several big plays, including a 58-yard reception that helped ignite the Alabama offense.
DeBoer said the response demonstrated why Coleman-Williams was selected as a team captain.
“He went out there, made some contested catches too,” DeBoer said. “We’re gonna keep feeding him. He’s a relentless worker, and he’s gonna keep getting the ball.”
The developing chemistry between Russell and Coleman-Williams could become one of the most important storylines for Alabama as the season progresses.
Alabama Defense Dominates
While Russell and the offense attracted most of the attention, Alabama’s defense delivered an equally impressive performance.
East Carolina managed only 162 total yards and five first downs. The Pirates struggled to sustain drives, going 0-for-9 on third down.
Their rushing attack was particularly ineffective.
East Carolina finished with just 2 yards on 22 rushing attempts. It was the fewest rushing yards Alabama has allowed against an FBS opponent since Mississippi State finished with minus-1 yard in 2021.
Quarterback Mitch Griffis completed 10 of 16 passes for 137 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception.
The Pirates’ only touchdown came late after Griffis connected with Tyler Johnson for a 66-yard completion that moved the ball to the Alabama 1-yard line. Jeremiah Melvin scored on the next play to put East Carolina on the board.
Russell Shows Room to Grow
Russell wasn’t flawless in his debut.
He lost a fumble in the third quarter and Alabama experienced some early communication and execution issues before settling into a rhythm.
DeBoer also noted that some pre-snap problems forced the Crimson Tide to burn timeouts.
Still, the overall performance left Alabama encouraged.
“I think there were some operational things pre-snap that caused us to use timeouts,” DeBoer said. “But it was to be expected. And I think he got better as the game went on.”
For a quarterback making his first collegiate start, Russell provided plenty of reasons for optimism.
His ability to make plays outside the pocket, combined with his effectiveness throwing the football, gave Alabama’s offense a different dimension and helped the Crimson Tide start the season with a decisive victory.

East Carolina will look to bounce back next Saturday when it hosts Appalachian State.
Alabama will face its first SEC challenge of the season when the Crimson Tide travels to Kentucky next Saturday for its conference opener.
