STATESBORO, Ga. — Georgia Southern wasted no time taking control Saturday night, overwhelming Charleston Southern from the opening possession and never allowing the Buccaneers to find an offensive rhythm.
The Eagles raced to a three-touchdown lead in the first quarter and their defense did the rest, shutting out the FCS opponent 31-0 while limiting Charleston Southern to just 35 total yards.
Quarterback Max Johnson orchestrated an efficient passing attack, completing 28 of 39 attempts for 281 yards while connecting with Ashton Hollins eight times for 106 yards and a touchdown.
But the story of the night was Georgia Southern’s defense, which produced its first shutout since 2023.
Eagles Strike Three Times in First Quarter
Georgia Southern needed only three possessions to put the game out of reach early.
Jamarian Samuel finished the Eagles’ opening drive with a 7-yard touchdown run, giving Georgia Southern a 7-0 advantage.
The Eagles quickly went back to work.
Johnson found Hollins for a 59-yard touchdown, creating separation downfield and pushing the lead to 14-0.
Before the first quarter ended, Weston Bryan powered into the end zone from one yard out, completing Georgia Southern’s third consecutive touchdown drive and giving the Eagles a commanding 21-0 lead.
Charleston Southern never recovered.
Defense Completely Stifles the Buccaneers
While Georgia Southern’s offense produced the early fireworks, the defense delivered a performance that will likely stand out all season.
The Buccaneers managed only 35 yards of total offense, struggling to sustain drives against an Eagles defense that consistently shut down opportunities before they could develop.
Charleston Southern managed only four drives that lasted more than four plays.
The Buccaneers finally reached the red zone late in the fourth quarter, giving them their best opportunity to avoid the shutout. But Georgia Southern’s defense closed the door when freshman Jayden Jackson intercepted a pass, preserving the shutout.
It was Georgia Southern’s first scoreless defensive performance since 2023.
Eagles Continue Adding to the Lead
Georgia Southern added three more points just before halftime when Tripp Bryant converted a 32-yard field goal, sending the Eagles into the break with a 24-0 advantage.
Bryant remained perfect on his extra-point attempts, converting all four.
The Eagles added another touchdown in the third quarter when Ty Cummings broke free for an 18-yard rushing score, extending the margin to 31-0.
From there, Georgia Southern’s defense made sure Charleston Southern never had a realistic path back into the game.
Johnson, Hollins Lead Offensive Attack
Johnson’s performance provided Georgia Southern with a steady presence at quarterback throughout the night.
The veteran signal-caller completed nearly 72% of his passes and repeatedly moved the Eagles down the field when needed.
Hollins emerged as his top target, finishing with eight receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown.
Georgia Southern also received rushing touchdowns from Samuel, Bryan and Cummings, giving the Eagles multiple ways to attack the Buccaneers.
The combination of an efficient passing game and a relentless defense allowed Georgia Southern to control the game from start to finish.

Georgia Southern couldn’t have asked for a better defensive performance.
The Eagles held Charleston Southern to 35 yards, kept the Buccaneers out of the end zone and forced the game’s final turnover when Jackson intercepted a pass in the red zone.
Offensively, Georgia Southern scored touchdowns on each of its first three drives and never looked back.
For Charleston Southern, the challenge now is to regroup quickly after being dominated on both sides of the ball.
