PEMBROKE, N.C. — The first half belonged to Valdosta State.
The second half belonged to UNC Pembroke.
In a game that featured 85 combined points and a dramatic change in momentum, UNC Pembroke erased a seven-point halftime deficit and rallied past No. 9 Valdosta State 44-41 on Saturday at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
The Braves trailed 27-20 at halftime, but their defense completely changed the complexion of the game after intermission. Valdosta State was held scoreless in both the second and third quarters before the Blazers mounted one final fourth-quarter push.
UNC Pembroke answered every challenge.
The victory moved the Braves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 at home, while Valdosta State dropped to 3-1.
Valdosta State Explodes Early
Valdosta State, which entered the game ranked No. 9 in the Division II football poll, came into Pembroke riding an undefeated 3-0 start.
The Blazers had been one of the most productive offenses in Division II through the opening weeks, averaging 45 points per game and coming off a 38-9 victory over Fayetteville State.
Saturday’s opening quarter looked like another Valdosta State offensive showcase.
The Blazers erupted for 27 points in the first quarter, repeatedly finding ways to break through the UNC Pembroke defense.
The Braves, however, refused to let the game get completely out of reach.
UNC Pembroke answered with 20 first-quarter points of its own, keeping pace with Valdosta State in an offensive shootout.
By halftime, the Blazers held a 27-20 advantage.
For UNC Pembroke, the challenge was simple: find a way to slow down an offense that had been producing points at a remarkable rate.
The Braves found the answer after halftime.
Defense Changes Everything
Whatever UNC Pembroke head coach and his staff told the team in the locker room worked.
The Braves came out of halftime with an entirely different level of intensity.
Valdosta State, which had scored 27 points in the opening quarter, suddenly couldn’t find the end zone.
The Blazers were shut out in the second quarter and again in the third.
Meanwhile, UNC Pembroke chipped away at the deficit.
The Braves added three points in the third quarter, cutting into Valdosta State’s advantage and setting up a dramatic fourth quarter.
The scoreboard entering the final period read 27-23, and the momentum had clearly shifted toward the home team.
Braves Take Command
UNC Pembroke saved its best football for the fourth quarter.
The Braves exploded for 21 points in the final period, while Valdosta State finally rediscovered its offensive rhythm with 14 points.
But every time the Blazers appeared ready to regain control, UNC Pembroke responded.
The Braves’ ability to finish drives in the fourth quarter ultimately separated the two teams.
UNC Pembroke’s offense produced enough explosive plays to turn a seven-point halftime deficit into a three-point victory.
The final quarter became a race to the finish.
And the Braves won it.
A Huge Win for UNC Pembroke
The victory was especially significant considering where both programs entered the afternoon.
Valdosta State arrived undefeated at 3-0 and ranked No. 9 nationally. The Blazers had already defeated Emory & Henry, Warner and Fayetteville State while averaging 45 points per game.
UNC Pembroke entered at 2-1 after defeating Shorter 31-24 the previous week. The Braves had also suffered a narrow 10-7 loss to Fayetteville State earlier in the season.
That made Saturday’s comeback even more impressive.
UNC Pembroke didn’t simply defeat an undefeated opponent.
The Braves overcame a 27-point first quarter, stayed within striking distance, completely shut down Valdosta State for two quarters and then delivered 21 points of their own in the fourth.
The final score reflected just how competitive the afternoon became.
A Game of Two Halves
The statistics on the scoreboard told the story better than anything else.

Valdosta State 27, UNC Pembroke 20

UNC Pembroke 24, Valdosta State 14
The Braves made the necessary adjustments, particularly defensively, and turned what appeared to be a potential Valdosta State rout into one of the most dramatic victories of the early Division II season.
For Valdosta State, the loss ended its perfect start.
For UNC Pembroke, it was a statement victory against one of the nation’s ranked teams.
The Braves showed they could withstand an offensive barrage, regroup at halftime and finish a game when the pressure was at its highest.
Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium belonged to UNC Pembroke.
