INGLEWOOD, CA. — The Los Angeles Rams needed a response after a disappointing season opener in Australia. They delivered one Monday night, and they did it with a familiar formula: Matthew Stafford throwing the football, Davante Adams making spectacular catches and Aaron Donald making his presence felt once again.
Stafford threw four touchdown passes, Adams erupted for 195 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and the Rams overwhelmed the New York Giants 28-6 at SoFi Stadium.
The victory moved Los Angeles to 1-1 and provided a much-needed rebound from last week’s 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The Rams also showed they could overcome injuries of their own, playing without All-Pro wide receiver Puka Nacua and defensive star Myles Garrett.
Adams was the centerpiece of the Rams’ offensive explosion.
The veteran receiver finished with eight catches, producing his best statistical game since joining Los Angeles. His 195 yards were the fourth-highest single-game receiving total of his 13-year NFL career.
Stafford repeatedly looked Adams’ way, and the connection immediately paid dividends.
Late in the first quarter, Stafford found Adams for a spectacular 31-yard touchdown, with Adams making an impressive high-point catch before racing into the end zone. The score gave the Rams a 7-0 advantage.
Adams struck again in the third quarter, this time beating the Giants’ coverage on an 11-yard touchdown reception that extended Los Angeles’ lead to 21-3.
His biggest play of the night came earlier in the second quarter, when Adams hauled in a 64-yard reception that set up Kyren Williams’ 10-yard touchdown catch.
For Stafford, the performance was equally impressive.
The reigning NFL MVP completed 22 of 31 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns, showing the precision and command that Los Angeles expected when it entered the season as one of the league’s top contenders.
The performance also moved Stafford into sixth place on the NFL’s all-time touchdown-pass list, giving him 426 career touchdown passes.
While the Rams’ offense controlled the night, the game changed dramatically for New York during its opening possession.
Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a left knee injury after taking a hard hit from Rams defenders Byron Young and Josaiah Stewart. Dart, who had opened the season with an impressive victory over Dallas, initially attempted to remain involved but was eventually ruled out.
Jameis Winston took over and struggled to generate consistent offense.
Winston finished 11 of 27 for 111 yards and an interception, while New York managed only 182 total yards. The Giants were unable to find the end zone and settled for two field goals.
New York’s offense had a few opportunities, but the Rams’ defense repeatedly shut down scoring threats.
One of the biggest defensive plays came late in the second quarter.
The Giants recovered a fumble at the Rams’ 11-yard line and appeared poised to cut into the deficit. Instead, Donald stepped forward on third down and made one of the night’s signature plays, bringing down running back Najee Harris for a three-yard loss.
New York settled for a field goal.
For Donald, it was an important moment in an emotional return.
After stepping away from football following the 2023 season, the three-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year returned to the Rams and played his first NFL game in 32 months.
Donald finished with three tackles, including the crucial tackle for loss near the goal line. His return was met with loud cheers from the SoFi Stadium crowd, and he immediately provided the physical presence the Rams were hoping to regain.
The Rams’ defense also received a strong performance from cornerback Trent McDuffie, who recorded an interception and four passes defensed.
New York did create some turnovers of its own.
Safety Jevon Holland forced and recovered a fumble and also intercepted Stafford, giving the Giants multiple opportunities. But New York couldn’t capitalize consistently, and the Rams’ defense repeatedly ended drives before they could become scoring opportunities.
The Giants’ injury problems continued throughout the game.
Wide receiver Malik Nabers briefly left after suffering a shoulder injury but returned. Pass rusher Brian Burns sustained an ankle injury late in the game, while starting offensive tackle Andrew Thomas also left with a groin injury. Rams running back Ronnie Rivers suffered a calf injury.
Stafford’s fourth touchdown pass came with 8:57 remaining in the fourth quarter, when he connected with tight end Terrance Ferguson for a five-yard score.
That touchdown pushed the Rams’ advantage to 28-6 and effectively ended any hope of a Giants comeback.
New York finished the night having been outgained 481-182, a reflection of just how thoroughly Los Angeles controlled the game after Dart’s departure.
For the Rams, the victory was about more than simply getting into the win column.
After an ugly opening-week loss overseas, Los Angeles returned home and looked like the team many expected to contend deep into the season. Stafford was efficient, Adams was dominant, McDuffie made plays in the secondary and Donald’s return gave the defense an emotional and physical lift.
Now the Rams will take that momentum on the road.
