AMES, Iowa — Wayshawn Parker needed only one play to announce his presence Saturday.
The Utah running back broke loose for a 54-yard gain on the opening snap and never let Iowa State’s defense settle in, finishing with three touchdowns as No. 15 Utah defeated the Cyclones 31-17.
Parker produced a career-best 174 rushing yards on 18 carries, scored twice on the ground and added another touchdown through the air as the Utes improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play.
Utah’s offense built a 24-3 halftime advantage before Iowa State mounted a second-half comeback attempt. The Cyclones cut the deficit to seven points early in the fourth quarter, but the Utes responded with the game’s decisive scoring drive before their defense delivered the final blow.
Quarterback Devon Dampier completed 18 of 27 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns while also helping Utah maintain its balance offensively. The Utes finished with 206 rushing yards.
Parker was responsible for the game’s first major breakthrough.
On Utah’s opening touchdown, Dampier went in motion as Parker took a direct snap. Parker briefly appeared ready to pitch the ball to Dampier before cutting left. He avoided a diving attempt by safety Duhron Goodman, broke into the open field and outran the remaining defenders for the score.
Later in the first half, Dampier connected with Braden Pegan for a 24-yard touchdown, and Parker added a 1-yard scoring run to give Utah a 24-3 lead heading into halftime.
Iowa State finally found some momentum after the break.
Jaylen Raynor sparked the Cyclones with an 8-yard touchdown run before making one of the game’s biggest plays on the following possession. Dominic Overby extended the ball across the goal line to convert a fourth-and-12, keeping the drive alive.
Raynor then found Overby for a 22-yard touchdown pass, pulling Iowa State within 24-17 early in the fourth quarter.
But Utah’s offense answered when it mattered most.
After punting on each of its first three possessions of the second half, the Utes put together a 61-yard scoring drive. Dampier finished the possession by finding Parker for a 13-yard touchdown, giving Utah a 31-17 cushion.
The defense then made sure the Cyclones would not get another opportunity.
On the first play of Iowa State’s next possession, Jackson Bennett intercepted Raynor, effectively ending the threat and allowing the Utes to control the remainder of the game.
Parker’s versatility was a major difference-maker throughout the afternoon. In addition to his 174 rushing yards, he caught five passes for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Raynor completed 21 of 40 passes for 205 yards and rushed for a touchdown for Iowa State, which fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12.
Aiden Flora provided some of the Cyclones’ most consistent production, rushing 13 times for 54 yards while catching five passes for 53 yards.
The loss exposed some of Iowa State’s early offensive struggles. The Cyclones failed to convert a third down on seven first-half attempts and spent much of the opening half unable to sustain drives.
The Takeaway
Utah: The Utes continue to pile up points at an impressive rate. Utah has now scored at least 30 points in 10 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the FBS.
Iowa State: The Cyclones’ slow start proved costly. Their offense eventually found its footing, but the early deficit created too much ground to make up against an unbeaten Utah team.

Utah returns home Oct. 10 to host Kansas.
Iowa State will try to rebound next Saturday when West Virginia visits Ames.
