EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 24 Northwestern continued its impressive run Saturday, overpowering Rutgers 42-14 behind a five-touchdown performance from quarterback Aidan Chiles to secure its fourth consecutive victory.

Chiles accounted for three passing touchdowns and two rushing scores as the Wildcats improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play. Northwestern’s offense struck early and often, building a commanding first-half advantage that Rutgers struggled to overcome.

Running back Caleb Komolafe contributed 150 rushing yards and a touchdown, including a 56-yard burst. Griffin Wilde led the receiving corps with 133 yards, while Alex Honig and Drew Wagner also caught touchdown passes.

Northwestern established control from the opening possession, scoring on each of its first three drives and taking a 21-3 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Head coach David Braun praised his team’s fast start, pointing to the urgency, concentration and execution displayed by the offense.

The Wildcats opened the scoring when Chiles connected with Wilde on a 13-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter. Komolafe helped set up the score with a 30-yard run, immediately putting pressure on the Scarlet Knights’ defense.

Rutgers briefly responded after starting quarterback Dylan Lonergan left the game following a collision during a scramble. Backup quarterback AJ Surace guided the Scarlet Knights into field-goal range, where Dane Pizzaro converted from 43 yards to make it 7-3.

However, Northwestern quickly regained momentum. Chiles broke free for a rushing touchdown to extend the Wildcats’ advantage to 14-3.

Rutgers’ difficulties intensified on its next possession. Surace was sacked and lost the football, which Northwestern recovered at the Scarlet Knights’ 8-yard line. Chiles capitalized on the turnover immediately, finding Honig for a touchdown that pushed the lead to 21-3.

Komolafe added another major play late in the second quarter, racing 33 yards for a touchdown to cap a 61-yard drive. Pizzaro connected on a 35-yard field goal just before halftime, leaving Rutgers trailing 28-6.

Chiles continued to demonstrate his dual-threat ability throughout the contest. He finished with 219 passing yards and a career-best 83 rushing yards, accounting for five touchdowns for the second time this season. He previously accomplished the feat in Northwestern’s 41-7 victory over Colorado on Sept. 19.

Braun said Chiles has grown increasingly comfortable in the offense while maintaining a strong desire to improve.

The quarterback’s approach reflects Northwestern’s balanced attack, which has allowed the Wildcats to exploit defenses through both the air and on the ground.

“This is an equal opportunity offense,” Chiles said, explaining that the team will continue to rely on whichever aspect of its attack proves most effective.

Rutgers attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, relying on its running game to generate opportunities. Antwan Raymond finished with 150 yards on 18 carries and provided the Scarlet Knights’ only touchdown, breaking loose for a 46-yard score late in the third quarter.

That opportunity followed Chiles’ first interception of the season, giving Rutgers favorable field position. Clay Thevenin also made an impact on the ground, rushing for 166 yards as the Scarlet Knights searched for a way back into the game.

Raymond’s touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion, reduced Northwestern’s lead to 28-14 with eight seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Wildcats responded in the fourth quarter, with Chiles connecting with Wagner on a 4-yard touchdown pass to restore a three-score cushion. Chiles later added his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon, completing Northwestern’s scoring and sealing the 28-point victory.

Rutgers struggled to find consistency after Lonergan’s departure. Surace completed passes for 64 yards but was sacked three times, while third-string quarterback Sean Ashenfelder also faced pressure from Northwestern’s aggressive defense.

Lonergan’s injury occurred when he scrambled for a short gain and slid as defenders closed in. His helmet collided with that of Northwestern defender Kobie McKinzie, leaving the quarterback down on the field before medical personnel assisted him. The severity of the injury was not immediately known.

The Scarlet Knights also received limited production from wide receiver KJ Duff, who finished with three targets for 33 yards.

For Northwestern, the victory marked its first 6-1 start since 2020 and secured bowl eligibility. Braun, however, emphasized that his team’s ambitions extend beyond simply qualifying for the postseason.

The Wildcats will now turn their attention to a difficult road matchup against Oregon on Oct. 31, while Rutgers prepares to host Michigan on the same date.

Northwestern’s combination of explosive offense, defensive pressure and efficient execution has positioned the Wildcats as a team to watch in the Big Ten. If Chiles and the offense maintain their current form, Northwestern could remain a significant factor as the conference race continues.
