Annapolis, MD—–North Texas delivered an explosive offensive performance Saturday, taking advantage of key Navy mistakes to secure a 49-39 victory in a game that featured big plays, rapid scoring and more than 700 yards of total offense.

The Mean Green established control early, scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions to build a 14-3 lead after the opening quarter. Navy responded in the second quarter with two touchdowns of its own, but North Texas continued to find the end zone twice to maintain its advantage. The teams combined for a flurry of points before heading into halftime with North Texas leading 28-17.

The action intensified after the break. North Texas capitalized on a Navy fumble, returning it 63 yards for a touchdown to extend its lead to 35-17. Navy answered immediately behind quarterback Jackson Gutierrez, who broke loose for a 43-yard rushing touchdown. After a successful two-point conversion, the Midshipmen trimmed the deficit to 35-25.

North Texas responded on its next possession when Taven Jackson connected on a 53-yard touchdown pass, pushing the Mean Green ahead 42-25 with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter.

Navy refused to back down. After stopping North Texas on downs at the 25-yard line, the Midshipmen gained possession again following an interception near midfield. Navy quickly turned the takeaway into points, as Gutierrez threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to bring the score to 42-32 heading into the fourth quarter.

Gutierrez continued to lead Navy’s offensive attack, surpassing 200 rushing yards early in the final period. His performance gave the Midshipmen a chance to rally, and running back Mike Barrow added a four-yard touchdown run to pull Navy within three points at 42-39 with 10:49 remaining.

However, North Texas had another answer. Janiem White broke free for a 59-yard touchdown run with 9:38 left, restoring a double-digit advantage and giving the Mean Green a 49-39 cushion.

Navy battled throughout the afternoon, but its mistakes and North Texas’ ability to deliver explosive plays proved costly. Despite the Midshipmen’s offensive production, they could not close the gap in the final minutes.

Gutierrez turned in a remarkable individual performance, finishing with more than 225 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns while adding over 130 passing yards and a touchdown through the air. His efforts kept Navy within striking distance, but North Texas made enough game-changing plays to secure the victory.

The loss marked Navy’s fifth defeat in its last six games, leaving the Midshipmen with plenty to address as they prepare for their next challenge.

Navy now turns its attention to a major matchup against Notre Dame in Boston on Halloween, an opportunity to regroup and get back on track.
