Chapel Hill, NC. — No. 1 Miami entered Saturday night’s matchup expecting a challenge, but the Hurricanes received far more resistance than anticipated from North Carolina before escaping with a dramatic 38-35 victory.
Running back Mark Fletcher Jr. delivered the decisive touchdown, powering into the end zone from two yards out on fourth down with 7:49 remaining. His third touchdown of the night gave Miami the lead, and the Hurricanes followed with a critical defensive takeaway that helped preserve their unbeaten record.
Miami improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, but the victory did not come easily. North Carolina, playing with confidence and determination, pushed the nation’s top-ranked team to the final minutes and nearly produced one of the biggest upsets of the college football season.
With the Hurricanes holding a narrow advantage, defensive linemen Marquise Lightfoot and Justin Scott delivered a game-changing sequence. Lightfoot chased down North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. from behind and knocked the football loose as Edwards attempted to make a throw. Scott recovered the fumble with 5:33 remaining, giving Miami possession at a critical moment.
The turnover shifted the momentum back toward the Hurricanes and created an opportunity for their offense to provide some breathing room.
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah helped capitalize on the opportunity, connecting with star wide receiver Malachi Toney for a nine-yard touchdown with 2:33 remaining. The scoring strike extended Miami’s advantage to 38-28 and appeared to put the game out of reach.
Elija Lofton also played an important role in the drive, making an impressive reception and leaping over an attempted tackle to move the chains and keep the possession alive.
However, North Carolina refused to go away quietly.
The Tar Heels continued fighting and made the final minutes uncomfortable for the Hurricanes. Miami’s defense struggled throughout the evening to consistently get off the field, allowing North Carolina to remain within striking distance.
The closing sequence became especially tense when the Tar Heels attempted an onside kick. North Carolina appeared to recover the ball twice, but both recoveries were wiped out by penalties. Miami eventually secured possession and was able to run out the clock.
The victory sends the Hurricanes into next week’s highly anticipated road matchup against No. 5 Notre Dame with their perfect record intact.
For head coach Bill Belichick and North Carolina, the loss was another difficult chapter against college football’s top-ranked programs. The Tar Heels dropped to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in ACC competition and remain winless in 12 meetings against teams ranked No. 1 nationally.
Miami escaped Chapel Hill with the victory, but the performance also exposed areas the Hurricanes will need to address before facing Notre Dame. Against a championship-caliber opponent, defensive consistency and the ability to finish drives will be essential.
The Hurricanes remain unbeaten, but Saturday night served as a reminder that every opponent presents a challenge when the top-ranked team takes the field.
