Anaheim, LA—–In Anaheim, the Seattle Mariners leaned on dominant pitching and late extra-inning execution to edge the Los Angeles Angels 3-1 on Friday night.

After a tightly contested, scoreless battle through nine innings, Cole Young provided the breakthrough immediately in the 10th. Leading off the inning, he ripped an RBI triple into the right-field corner to bring home automatic runner Luke Raley. Moments later, Josh Naylor added insurance with a two-run single, capping a decisive rally against reliever Brent Suter.

Seattle’s pitching staff was the true story. Starter Bryan Woo delivered a stellar outing, tossing seven innings of one-hit baseball while striking out six. After allowing a lone hit early, he settled in and retired his final 12 batters, keeping Los Angeles off balance all night.

The bullpen took it from there, with Andrés Muñoz handling the ninth in his return after several days off. Gabe Speier closed it out for his second career save, though Mike Trout scored on a sacrifice fly by Jorge Soler to account for the Angels’ only run.

In total, Mariners pitching allowed just one hit across 10 innings and retired the final 21 Angels hitters in a remarkable stretch of dominance.

Los Angeles starter Reid Detmers matched Woo for much of the night, going 6 2/3 innings while giving up three hits and issuing four walks. Still, neither team mounted much offense early, combining for just five singles through nine innings in a sluggish home opener for the Angels.

The Angels’ lone hit came off the bat of Oswald Peraza in the third inning, while Trout also reached via walk after being hit by a pitch earlier in the game.

Looking ahead, Seattle will send Emerson Hancock to the mound for his second start of the season, facing Jack Kochanowicz, who is aiming to rebound from a tough season debut for Los Angeles.
