Philadelphia, PA—–A dream season for the Miami RedHawks men’s basketball came to a disappointing close Friday night, as they were overpowered by the Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball in a 78-56 defeat in the NCAA Tournament.

Miami showed early promise, jumping out to a quick lead behind a hot start from beyond the arc in the opening minutes. But that momentum didn’t last long. Tennessee quickly settled in, flipping the game in its favor and taking control before the RedHawks could respond.

By halftime, the Volunteers had built a commanding 51-32 lead, fueled by efficient offense and relentless pressure. The second half followed a similar script, with Tennessee continuing to pull away and never allowing Miami to get back within striking distance.

Ja’Kobi Gillespie led Tennessee with a standout 29-point performance, while J.P. Estrella added 14 points and Felix Okpara contributed 12.

For Miami, Peter Suder carried the offensive load, scoring 27 points—nearly half of the team’s total. However, the RedHawks struggled to find consistent scoring elsewhere. Despite entering the game with a balanced attack that featured multiple double-digit scorers during the season, no other Miami player was able to break into double figures.

The loss comes just days after Miami earned a First Four victory over SMU Mustangs men’s basketball to reach the Round of 64, marking a significant milestone for the program.

Even with the early tournament exit, the RedHawks’ season will be remembered as one of the most successful in school history. Miami finished the regular season undefeated—an achievement accomplished by only a select few teams—and firmly established itself on the national stage.

However, postseason play proved more challenging. Friday’s loss followed an earlier setback in the MAC Tournament, where Miami was upset by Massachusetts Minutemen men’s basketball.

Tennessee now advances to face Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball in the next round, while Miami turns its attention to the future after a season that, despite its ending, marked a major step forward for the program.
