New York, NY—-Gerry’s journey with Special Olympics began at just eight years old, setting the foundation for a path defined by persistence, growth, and achievement. After stepping away during high school to focus on academics, Gerry returned in their early 20s with renewed determination, competing in a wide range of sports including basketball, softball, track, flag football, and volleyball.

What started as a challenge—overcoming a lack of confidence in athletics—has transformed into a source of empowerment. Through Special Olympics, Gerry has built meaningful relationships, gained self-belief, and begun to see the once-distant dream of becoming a professional athlete as something within reach.

Gerry takes great pride in overcoming early physical limitations and pushing beyond them through hard work and dedication. Among their proudest accomplishments are earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a 3.0 GPA, capturing three gold medals at state-level competitions, and securing a spot on the national volleyball team.

Qualifying for the USA Games stands as a defining moment. Even earning a tryout was an honor, but receiving the official acceptance letter marked the realization of years of effort and commitment. Gerry is especially excited about competing on a national stage, connecting with teammates, and embracing the experience of performing in front of a large audience.

Preparation for the Games is a major focus. Gerry trains consistently throughout the week, balancing practices, team meetings, and events while prioritizing team chemistry and overall performance.

Outside of athletics, Gerry enjoys collecting nostalgic items, particularly those tied to the 1990s—classic video games, vinyl records, and album artwork. Community involvement is also a key part of Gerry’s life, volunteering at the Don Bosco Youth Center in Orange, New Jersey, where they mentor and encourage young people through various activities.

A passion for working with children has been evident since age 16. Today, Gerry serves as a paraprofessional in early childhood education, supporting classroom instruction and leading physical education activities. In addition, they work as an aftercare counselor, organizing STEM projects and sports to keep students engaged and active.

From early challenges to national-level competition, Gerry’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and a commitment to uplifting others along the way.
