Charlotte, NC. — If there was one message that resonated throughout the Miami Hurricanes’ latest media availability, it was that last season’s accomplishments mean little without continued growth.

Head coach Mario Cristobal and several of the team’s veteran leaders outlined a program built on accountability, consistency and daily improvement as Miami prepares for the 2026 college football season.

“We’re focused on getting better every single day,” Cristobal said, emphasizing that sustained success requires total commitment from everyone in the program.

Cristobal Sets the Standard

Cristobal repeatedly stressed that consistency is not the responsibility of a select few—it belongs to the entire roster.

“Remaining consistent takes everyone,” he said, reinforcing his philosophy that every player and coach must be accountable every day.

The Hurricanes’ head coach explained that leadership qualities, football intelligence and a player’s willingness to compete are among the most important factors when evaluating quarterbacks through the transfer portal. Miami has enjoyed recent success with transfer quarterbacks, and Cristobal acknowledged that those results have elevated expectations for the position.

Despite the optimism surrounding the program, Cristobal warned against becoming comfortable.

“There is no value in coming back thinking we are good,” he said, adding that every practice repetition should be approached with urgency and purpose.

Cristobal also shared a lighter moment with reporters, joking that he hopes Hall of Famer Michael Irvin “never kisses me on the cheek again,” drawing laughter before immediately shifting the conversation back to football.

Looking ahead, Cristobal expressed excitement about Miami’s future schedule, including upcoming matchups against HBCU opponents, saying he welcomes the opportunity to compete against those programs.

Fletcher Focused on Fundamentals

Running back Mark Fletcher credited last season with helping him mature both on and off the field.

According to Fletcher, balancing hard work with enjoying the game has helped him become a more complete player.

“Hard work and having fun makes me a better player,” Fletcher said.

The talented back added that experience taught him the importance of paying attention to every detail.

“All the little things matter,” he said.

His comments reflected the culture Cristobal continues to emphasize throughout the program.

Mensah Brings Confidence and Experience

Transfer quarterback Darian Mensah enters the season with experience gained from multiple stops during his collegiate career.

“Being at my third spot only makes me a better player,” Mensah said.

He acknowledged that protecting the football remains an area he wants to improve while expressing confidence in his overall development.

Mensah said Miami’s recent success developing transfer quarterbacks played a significant role in his decision to join the Hurricanes. He also spoke about his familiarity with one of Miami’s transfer wide receivers, whom he previously played alongside at Duke.

Confident in his preparation and football IQ, Mensah summed up one of his greatest strengths by saying, “I’m really elite between the ears.”

Toure Leads Miami’s Defense

Linebacker Mohamed Toure, the ACC’s leading returning tackler, believes Miami’s defense can take another step by staying true to its identity.

“We play our best when we play to our strengths,” Toure said.

Coming off a season in which he led the Hurricanes in tackles, Toure brings veteran leadership to a defense expected to be one of the conference’s strengths.

He also expressed confidence in his decision to transfer to Miami.

“It was the best decision I made,” Toure said.

Building the Right Culture

Throughout the press conference, one theme remained consistent: accountability.

From Cristobal’s message that every player must contribute daily to Fletcher’s emphasis on fundamentals, Mensah’s confidence and Toure’s leadership, the Hurricanes continue to build a program centered on discipline, preparation and relentless improvement.

As preseason camp approaches, Miami believes its culture—not just its talent—will determine how far the Hurricanes can go in 2026. The expectation inside the program is clear: every player, every practice and every rep matters.
