Washington, DC—–The D.C. Defenders kicked off their title defense in emphatic fashion, celebrating their championship before overwhelming the Houston Gamblers 45-7 at Audi Field.

The night began with a championship banner unveiling, but the Defenders quickly shifted focus to the field—and wasted no time making an impact. On just their second offensive snap, running back Deon Jackson exploded for a 60-yard touchdown run, immediately energizing the home crowd.

D.C.’s defense followed with a quick stop, setting up kicker Matt McCrane for a booming 60-yard field goal worth four points under league rules, extending the lead to 11-0.

Even after quarterback Jordan Ta’amu threw an interception, the Defenders maintained control. The defense forced a fumble from Houston quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, leading to another McCrane kick and a 14-0 advantage.

Moments later, the game turned firmly into a rout. Defensive back Gareon Conley picked off Tagovailoa and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown, pushing the margin to 21-0.

Before halftime, the Defenders added a creative highlight. On fourth down, Ta’amu sold a play-action fake before slipping the ball to tight end Briley Moore, who raced in for a touchdown. The score gave D.C. a 28-0 halftime lead—the largest in league history.

The second half brought more of the same. Moore found the end zone again, and running back Abram Smith added another score as the Defenders continued to pour it on.

Defensively, D.C. lived up to its name, limiting Houston to just 214 total yards while applying constant pressure. Gabe Taylor led the way with six tackles and a sack, while Derick Roberson chipped in with two sacks of his own.

With the dominant win, the Defenders begin their title defense in commanding fashion and now turn their attention to a highly anticipated matchup against St. Louis Battlehawks next weekend, looking to avenge their only loss from last season.
