WEST POINT, N.Y. —Army West Point put on an offensive showcase Saturday, overwhelming Florida Atlantic 56-24 at Michie Stadium with a relentless rushing attack, timely defensive takeaways and a series of explosive plays that kept the Black Knights in control.

Quarterback Cale Hellums led the charge with a career-best performance on the ground, rushing for 195 yards on 25 carries. He scored five touchdowns, while Army repeatedly wore down the Owls with long, clock-consuming drives.

The Black Knights scored touchdowns on all five of their first-half scoring drives and converted two Florida Atlantic turnovers—an interception and a fumble on a kickoff—into 14 points. Army continued its offensive surge after halftime, scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions of the second half.

After several weeks in which points were difficult to come by, the matchup quickly developed into a high-scoring affair. The teams combined for 28 points in the first quarter, with Army rushing for 172 yards while Florida Atlantic generated 103 passing yards.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

Florida Atlantic quarterback Caden Veltkamp wasted little time demonstrating his ability to move the offense. After his first pass was intercepted, he responded by completing three passes during an eight-play scoring drive that tied the game. Veltkamp found Easton Messer running open along a seam route for a 24-yard touchdown.

Army answered with an explosive run from Hellums. Coming off a 58-yard touchdown run against Tulane the previous week, Hellums found another opening when Florida Atlantic’s defense reacted to motion toward the right side involving Zach Mundell. With the left side of the field exposed, Hellums sprinted into the open space for a touchdown that gave Army a 14-7 lead.

The Owls responded in just three minutes. Veltkamp completed four passes for 66 yards during the drive, including a 49-yard touchdown connection with Messer that was erased by a holding penalty. Florida Atlantic recovered and finished the possession when Kelby Velsin got behind cornerback Jaydan Mayes for a 34-yard touchdown. The extra point tied the game at 14.

Army then returned to its ground-oriented approach, calling running plays on 11 of its next 12 snaps. The drive consumed 6 minutes, 12 seconds and ended with Hellums following fullback Jake Rendina around the right side for a 4-yard touchdown. Army regained the lead, 21-14, early in the second quarter.

The Black Knights’ defense recorded its first stop when Florida Atlantic kicker Collin Rogers missed a 50-yard field-goal attempt. The kick traveled low and wobbling through the wind before grazing the outside of the right upright.

Army’s Ground Game Takes Over

Army continued to impose its will on the ground, stringing together another lengthy drive built around 15 running plays. The possession lasted 8 minutes, 46 seconds and ended with Hellums following Rendina and Stroman Bridges into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown.

Hellums also converted two fourth-down situations during the drive, helping Army maintain possession and extend its advantage to 28-14.

The Black Knights received another opportunity when Dom Henry fielded the ensuing kickoff for Florida Atlantic. Bridges knocked the ball loose, and Rob Houston recovered the fumble at the Owls’ 28-yard line with 1:12 remaining in the first half.

Army needed only six rushing plays to capitalize. With 25 seconds left before halftime, Hellums followed Rendina up the middle for another 3-yard touchdown. He celebrated in the end zone by counting his four first-half touchdowns on his fingers as Army carried a commanding 35-14 advantage into the break.

The Black Knights had scored touchdowns on all five of their first-half scoring drives, showcasing remarkable efficiency and an ability to turn Florida Atlantic’s mistakes into points.

Second-Half Surge Seals the Victory

Army wasted no time adding to its lead after halftime. On the opening kickoff of the second half, Rendina charged through three blockers and broke free for a career-long 61-yard touchdown run. He celebrated by mimicking Superman ripping open his jersey, pushing the Black Knights’ advantage to 42-14.

Florida Atlantic finally got points from Rogers, who connected on a 41-yard field goal to make it 42-17. Army responded with another punishing rushing drive, relying on 13 running plays to move downfield.

Near the goal line, Hellums completed his record-setting performance with a touchdown run from the 1-yard line. He leaned backward to reach across the goal line, adding his fifth rushing touchdown of the afternoon. On the preceding play, Samari Howard had been stopped after gaining just 2 yards on a short pass. Hellums later apologized to Howard following the score.

Army’s ground attack continued to produce big plays late in the game. Backup quarterback Bryson Luter broke two tackles and raced 69 yards up the middle for a touchdown with 1 minute, 48 seconds remaining, putting the finishing touches on the 56-24 victory.

Veltkamp continued to produce through the air despite Army’s defensive pressure. He completed 33 of 48 passes for 318 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, giving the Owls a productive passing performance even as they struggled to contain the Black Knights’ rushing attack.

Army’s offensive line and running game proved decisive. The Black Knights finished with 479 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, while their defense made Florida Atlantic pay for critical mistakes. Army converted all three of its first-half touchdowns following extended scoring drives and added further separation with its explosive kickoff return and late touchdown run.

For Florida Atlantic, Veltkamp’s passing production and the early offensive response provided bright spots, but the turnovers and Army’s ability to control the clock made it difficult for the Owls to keep pace.

The victory moved Army to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the American Conference, while Florida Atlantic fell to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
