Anaheim, CA — José Soriano showcased his impressive skills on the mound, allowing just two hits through six innings as the Los Angeles Angels halted the San Diego Padres’ eight-game winning streak with a commanding 8-0 victory on Friday night. This triumph marked Soriano’s fifth consecutive win.

The Angels’ offense was highlighted by homers from Yoán Moncada and Josh Lowe, while Adam Frazier contributed with an RBI triple and Jo Adell added a two-run double. The victory came as the Angels kicked off a six-game homestand with a decisive win over their Southern California rivals.

Soriano (5-0) continued his outstanding season despite issuing four walks, striking out eight batters and lowering his ERA to an impressive 0.28, having allowed only one run across 32 2/3 innings. He currently leads Major League Baseball in strikeouts with 39, tying with Milwaukee’s Aaron Ashby as the only pitchers in the league with five wins this season.

The Angels’ bullpen maintained the shutout, with three relievers combining to complete the three-hit effort, handing the Padres their first shutout loss of the year.

Prior to the game, Angel Stadium paid tribute to Garret Anderson, the beloved former outfielder and franchise hits leader, who passed away at the age of 53. The Angels honored his memory with a moment of silence and are wearing patches featuring Anderson’s initials on their uniforms.

In his season debut, Matt Waldron (0-1) struggled for the Padres, allowing six runs on eight hits. San Diego, which had enjoyed a flawless 7-0 homestand, faced only its second loss in the past two weeks after winning 11 of 12 games following a rough start to the season.

Waldron, who started 26 games for the Padres in 2024, made a limited appearance last year and encountered delays in the current season due to a procedure for a hemorrhoid he underwent in February.

Moncada ignited a three-run rally with his homer in the second inning, and Soriano managed to navigate out of a bases-loaded situation in the third by forcing Jackson Merrill to ground out.

Nolan Schanuel added to the scoring in the fourth with an RBI single that chased Waldron from the game. Adell and Lowe followed shortly after with two-run hits against David Morgan.

Soriano’s outing concluded after Manny Machado connected for a single and Xander Bogaerts walked, but Chase Silseth came in to retire Gavin Sheets, who flew out to the warning track in right field.
