Columbus, OH——The Columbus Aviators bounced back in a big way Friday night, knocking off the Houston Gamblers 24-17 behind a dominant first half and a clutch defensive effort late.
After falling to Houston a week ago, Columbus came out determined to control the game—and did exactly that with a methodical opening drive. John Lovett powered the ground attack, chewing up yardage on a long possession that ended with his three-yard touchdown run to open the scoring.
Houston responded quickly. Quarterback Nolan Henderson extended a drive with a 37-yard scramble before Marcus Major capped it with a 13-yard touchdown run, continuing the Gamblers’ trend of fast starts.
But Columbus’ offense found its rhythm and didn’t let up. Quarterback Jalan McClendon mixed the run and pass effectively, leading a second scoring drive highlighted by key receptions from Gunnar Oakes and Tay Martin. The drive finished with Antwane Wells stretching across the goal line for a touchdown.
A Houston field goal trimmed the deficit, but McClendon answered with one of the biggest plays of the night—a deep 52-yard strike to Martin that set up another rushing score, this time from Zaquandre White. By halftime, Columbus had built a 21-10 lead, fueled by balanced offense and efficient quarterback play.
The second half brought adversity for Houston, as injuries at quarterback forced Taulia Tagovailoa into action. He helped spark a comeback, connecting on a 21-yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Keys that cut the deficit to one possession entering the fourth quarter.

Houston’s defense stiffened late, creating opportunities to tie the game, including a fourth-down stop and a missed field goal by Columbus. But each time, the Aviators’ defense answered. A key three-and-out gave the offense breathing room, and another late stop forced Houston into a desperate final drive.
With injuries piling up, the Gamblers turned to Jontre Kirklin at quarterback after a sack by Ron Stone Jr. knocked Tagovailoa out of the game. The comeback attempt fell short when Kedrick Whitehead Jr. intercepted a last-second pass, sealing the win for Columbus.
The Aviators leaned heavily on their rushing attack, finishing with 179 yards on the ground, with Lovett leading the way. Martin delivered a standout performance in the passing game, surpassing 100 receiving yards.
Defensively, Kenny Willekes set the tone with six tackles, a sack, and multiple tackles for loss, helping Columbus close out the game.
With the win, Columbus regains momentum and now turns its attention to a road matchup against St. Louis Battlehawks next Friday night.
