Queens, NY——The New York Mets delivered one of their most dramatic victories of the season Sunday afternoon, rallying from a late three-run deficit to defeat the New York Yankees 7-6 in 10 innings before a crowd of 40,232 at Citi Field.
The comeback victory allowed the Mets to capture two of three games in the latest edition of the Subway Series and sent the home crowd into a frenzy after rookie Carson Benge delivered the game-winning play in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Trailing 6-3 entering the ninth, the Mets appeared headed toward another heartbreaking loss before veteran outfielder Tyrone Taylor changed the momentum entirely. With two outs and two runners aboard, Taylor crushed a first-pitch curveball from Yankees closer David Bednar just inside the left-field foul pole for a game-tying three-run homer.
The blast stunned the Yankees and marked Bednar’s second blown save opportunity of the season.
The Mets carried that energy into the 10th inning. Automatic runner Marcus Semien advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before the Yankees attempted a defensive gamble by bringing left fielder Max Schuemann into the infield to create a five-man setup.
After Luis Torrens was hit by a pitch, Benge stepped to the plate and chopped a bouncing ball back toward the mound. Schuemann fielded it on the infield grass, but a collision with shortstop Anthony Volpe prevented any play at the plate as Semien slid home safely with the winning run.
The victory was especially significant for the Mets, who had not won a game when trailing after eight innings since Pete Alonso’s dramatic postseason home run during the 2024 National League Wild Card Series against Milwaukee.
While the Mets improved to 20-26 overall and continued a strong month of May with a 10-5 record, the Yankees finished a disappointing road trip at 2-7 despite appearing in control for much of Sunday’s game.
Volpe played a major role offensively for the Yankees, delivering a go-ahead two-run single earlier in the game and later drawing a bases-loaded walk. Ben Rice also provided power with his 15th home run of the season, helping New York build what looked like a comfortable late lead.
The Yankees took advantage of control issues from Mets starter Freddy Peralta, who matched a career high by issuing six walks. Defensive miscues also contributed to New York’s scoring surge, including an error by Bo Bichette in shallow left field that allowed an additional run to score.
The Mets responded in the middle innings when Torrens delivered a clutch two-run double off the bench to keep the game within reach.
Sunday’s matchup featured momentum swings throughout, but the Mets ultimately capitalized on the Yankees’ late bullpen collapse and defensive breakdowns to secure one of their most memorable wins of the year.
Up next, the Yankees return home Monday with Ryan Weathers scheduled to face Toronto, while the Mets head to Washington behind right-hander Christian Scott for the opener of their road series against the Nationals.
