Columbus,OH—–The Columbus Aviators pulled off one of the most dramatic comebacks of the UFL season Saturday night, rallying from an early deficit to stun the Birmingham Stallions 36-29 in a chaotic Week 9 showdown in Columbus.

Making his first start of the season after being named the starter earlier in the week, quarterback Jalen Morton delivered a breakout performance, accounting for 309 total yards and four touchdowns while keeping the Aviators’ playoff hopes alive.

The game started with absolute mayhem.

On Birmingham’s opening offensive snap, quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was intercepted for the first time this season by O’Donnell Fortune, instantly giving Columbus excellent field position deep in Stallions territory.

But the momentum quickly swung back the other way in bizarre fashion. Facing fourth down inside the red zone, Columbus attempted a backward pass that was knocked loose by Alex Cook. Cook scooped up the live ball and sprinted 73 yards for a stunning defensive touchdown.

The chaos only intensified moments later when Birmingham’s extra point attempt was blocked by Akeem Dent. Nehemiah Shelton recovered the loose ball and returned it for a rare defensive conversion, giving the Stallions a bizarre 6-1 lead.

As the wild opening settled, Birmingham’s offense finally found rhythm behind Thompson-Robinson. The Stallions quarterback engineered a methodical scoring drive capped by a 17-yard touchdown strike to Deon Cain, extending the lead to 13-1.

Morton quickly sparked life into the Columbus offense. After breaking loose on a 29-yard scramble, he connected with John Lovett on a swing pass that turned into a 16-yard touchdown, trimming the deficit to 13-8.

Birmingham responded again after a costly defensive pass interference penalty extended a drive that appeared over. Tyrion Davis-Price later punched in a short touchdown run to push the Stallions ahead 20-8.

Despite the deficit, Morton continued attacking through the air, showcasing the aggressive passing game Columbus had lacked for much of the season. He connected with Easop Winston Jr. on a key third-down conversion before finding tight end Gunnar Oakes for a 20-yard touchdown pass, cutting Birmingham’s lead to 20-14.

The Stallions added a late field goal before halftime after Thompson-Robinson hooked up with league-leading receiver Jaydon Mickens on a big gain, taking a 23-14 advantage into the break.

Columbus emerged from halftime with renewed energy.

The Aviators defense immediately forced a three-and-out, highlighted by Ron Stone Jr.’s fifth sack of the season. Morton then orchestrated another impressive scoring drive, including a clutch fourth-down completion to Keke Chism before escaping pressure and finding Lovett on a spectacular 34-yard touchdown play.

Suddenly, the Aviators were back within striking distance at 23-21.

Birmingham managed to slow the momentum briefly when Snoop Conner ripped off a long run that set up another Anders Carlson field goal, extending the Stallions lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, Birmingham capitalized on Morton’s second turnover after Ryan Cooper intercepted a tipped pass, giving the Stallions another opportunity to create separation. But Columbus’ defense stood tall again, forcing only a field goal to keep the game within reach at 29-21.

With just over three minutes remaining and needing a touchdown plus a two-point conversion, Morton delivered the defining drive of the night.

Pinned deep in his own territory, Morton first created breathing room with a tough scramble before connecting with Oakes on a huge gain. A costly pass interference penalty against Birmingham then moved Columbus deep into scoring territory.

On perhaps the biggest play of the game, Morton escaped multiple defenders, kept the play alive, and powered into the end zone for an incredible rushing touchdown.

Still trailing by two, Morton calmly delivered again, finding Chism in the back of the end zone for the game-tying conversion.

Then came the decisive moment.

On Birmingham’s next possession, DJ Miller Jr. stepped in front of a Thompson-Robinson pass and returned the interception 39 yards for the go-ahead touchdown, completing an unbelievable comeback and sending the Columbus crowd into a frenzy.

The Stallions still had one final opportunity after favorable field position on the ensuing kickoff, but Birmingham’s desperation fourth-down pass fell incomplete, sealing the thrilling Aviators victory.

Columbus’ defense played a critical role in the comeback effort, holding Birmingham to only 237 total yards while recording four sacks and forcing two turnovers. Tony Fields led the defensive effort with 10 tackles, a sack, and two tackles for loss.

The victory keeps Columbus firmly in the postseason hunt heading into next week’s regular-season finale against the Louisville Kings.
