New Haven, Conn. — As I walked onto the field at Hopkins School on Saturday for Dallas Cowboys first-round draft pick Tyler Booker’s fifth annual youth and high school football camp, I couldn’t help but pause for a moment and take it all in.

It felt surreal.

Not because Tyler Booker is now an NFL player. Not because he was selected 12th overall by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2025 NFL Draft. Not even because hundreds of young athletes were gathered to learn from one of the best young offensive linemen in professional football.

It felt surreal because I remembered the beginning.

I remembered the first time I met Tyler and his father, William Booker.

Back then, Tyler was just a young athlete with big dreams and enormous potential. I was trying to convince his father to allow Tyler to participate in the IV Star Showcase. William wasn’t quite convinced his son was ready for that stage.

I remember looking at Tyler and telling his father something I’ve never forgotten:

“He’s special.”

At the time, it may have sounded like just another evaluation from someone who had seen countless young athletes come through camps and showcases. But there was something different about Tyler. His size was impressive, but it wasn’t just the physical tools that stood out.

It was his focus.

It was his maturity.

It was the way he carried himself.

Over the years, the Booker family became more than just people I covered or worked with in football circles. They became extended family.

His mother, Tashona Booker — affectionately known by many as “Momager” — was instrumental in shaping the young man Tyler would become. She constantly made sure he remained grounded despite the growing attention and recruiting accolades.

While many young athletes get distracted by rankings, offers, and social media hype, Tyler never lost sight of what mattered most.

His father William was equally important in the process.

He challenged Tyler relentlessly.

On the field.

In the classroom.

In life.

Nothing was ever handed to him.

William demanded excellence and accountability, making sure his son understood that talent alone would never be enough.

And Tyler embraced it.

Every challenge that came his way, he attacked head-on.

Whether it was competing at Bergen Catholic, one of the nation’s premier high school football programs, or later transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, Tyler never complained about the work required.

He simply put his head down and got better.

Every year.

Every season.

Every practice.

Every rep.

What always impressed me most was that his vision never changed.

Every time we talked throughout his journey, his goal remained crystal clear.

He was going to make it to the NFL.

Not hopefully.

Not maybe.

He believed it.

And then he worked to make it happen.

Academics were always a priority in the Booker household. While many people focus on the football accomplishments, what often gets overlooked are the sacrifices made behind the scenes.

The countless miles traveled.

The early mornings.

The late nights.

The moves.

The financial commitments.

The emotional investment.

From New Jersey to Florida, the Booker family made sacrifices to position their son for success. Every decision was made with purpose.

And Tyler rewarded that faith.

Coming out of high school, he was rated as a four-star recruit and one of the top prospects in the country. Scholarship offers poured in from college football powerhouses including Florida, Georgia, Oregon, and Ohio State.

Yet he chose Alabama.

At Alabama, Tyler continued his ascent.

He developed into one of the nation’s premier offensive linemen, earning All-American honors while helping uphold the Crimson Tide’s championship standard.

But no matter where football took him, he never forgot where he came from.

He carried New Haven, Connecticut, with him everywhere.

It wasn’t just his hometown.

It was part of his identity.

He wore it like a badge of honor.

Then came the moment he had dreamed about his entire life.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Tyler Booker with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

For many players, that moment represents the finish line.

For Tyler, it was simply the next chapter.

One thing I always reminded him throughout his football journey was simple:

“You never know who’s watching. Always practice hard. Always play hard.”

Tyler embraced that mindset.

He never looked for shortcuts.

He never chased attention.

He let his work ethic and his film do the talking.

And while his talent opened doors, it was his humility that earned the respect of coaches, teammates, and everyone around him.

That’s why Saturday meant so much.

Watching Tyler move from drill station to drill station, taking time to coach young athletes, correcting techniques, teaching fundamentals, and encouraging kids preparing for their own high school football journeys, I saw the same young man I’ve known for years.

The NFL spotlight hasn’t changed him.

The first-round draft status hasn’t changed him.

The fame hasn’t changed him.

He was still Tyler.

Still teaching.

Still learning.

Still giving back.

His annual camp has become a staple in the community, and seeing him return home to invest in the next generation feels perfectly fitting. New Haven helped shape him, mold him, and support him throughout his journey.

Now he’s returning the favor.

As I stood on that field surrounded by the Booker family, former coaches, community members, parents, and young athletes eager to learn, I couldn’t help but feel proud.

Proud of what Tyler has accomplished.

Proud of the family that helped get him there.

Proud of a community that continues to celebrate one of its own.

Most importantly, proud of the young man who never forgot where he came from.

Saturday wasn’t just another football camp.

It was a reminder that hard work still matters.

That family still matters.

That community still matters.

And that dreams really can come true when talent meets preparation, sacrifice, and unwavering belief.

For me, it felt less like covering an event and more like coming home.

Among family.

Exactly where I was supposed to be.
