Woodland Hills, CA. — The Los Angeles Rams received an important boost on the practice field Wednesday as All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett returned for the first time since undergoing knee surgery in September.
Garrett’s return comes at a critical point in the season as the Rams prepare for Sunday’s matchup against the Washington Commanders in Landover, Maryland. Los Angeles is looking to build on consecutive victories and improve its 4-4 record while gaining ground in the NFC West.
Head coach Sean McVay said the organization plans to take a cautious approach with Garrett as he works his way back into football activities. The defensive standout was limited during Wednesday’s session, with the coaching staff monitoring how his knee responds to the increased workload.
McVay indicated that Garrett would take approximately half of the available repetitions before the team evaluates his progress. His return to practice opens a 21-day window for the Rams to activate him from injured reserve.
The news was welcomed throughout the defensive unit. Outside linebacker Byron Young expressed excitement about seeing Garrett back on the field, while cornerback Trent McDuffie also pointed to the impact his presence could have on the defense.

Garrett has missed seven games since suffering the injury following the season-opening loss to San Francisco. His return could provide another dimension to a pass rush that has shown improvement in recent weeks.
The Rams are also working to get additional players back into the lineup. Tight end Terrance Ferguson returned to practice on a limited basis after dealing with an ankle injury, while running back Ronnie Rivers was designated to return from injured reserve and participated fully.
There were concerns elsewhere on the injury report. Cornerback Jaylen Watson is expected to undergo shoulder surgery and miss the remainder of the season, according to McVay. The loss creates another challenge for a secondary that has been dealing with injuries.
McDuffie and safety Kam Curl did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Tight end Colby Parkinson and long snapper Joe Cardona also remained sidelined. Wide receiver Jordan Whittington and guard Steve Avila were among the players listed as limited participants.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford was a full participant despite being listed with right elbow soreness. Stafford downplayed the issue, describing the discomfort as typical for this point in the season and expressing confidence in his ability to continue practicing.
Los Angeles enters the week following a convincing 24-9 victory over the Chargers. The defense delivered an encouraging performance in that contest, helping the Rams secure their second consecutive win.
The challenge now is carrying that momentum into Washington. The Commanders are coming off a 27-10 victory over Philadelphia and will look to make it two straight wins.
For the Rams, Garrett’s return offers a reason for optimism, but the team will need to remain patient as he works toward game readiness. His availability for Sunday’s contest has not been determined.
