Baton Rouge, La. — Alabama delivered a statement victory Saturday night at Tiger Stadium, overcoming a determined LSU squad to earn a 31-13 win and strengthen its position in the College Football Playoff race.

The ninth-ranked Crimson Tide received a resilient performance from quarterback Keelon Russell, who battled through an ankle injury to throw three touchdown passes. Alabama’s defense also came through in critical moments, repeatedly stopping LSU on fourth down and preventing the Tigers from turning scoring opportunities into points.

Alabama improved to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in Southeastern Conference play, while LSU dropped to 6-3 and 3-3 in the conference. The defeat also marked another frustrating chapter for first-year LSU head coach Lane Kiffin, who remains winless against Alabama in six career meetings, including his previous coaching stops at Mississippi and Tennessee.

Russell’s determination became one of the biggest storylines of the evening. After being examined in the medical tent during the third quarter because of an ankle injury, he returned to lead the Crimson Tide offense.

The Alabama quarterback connected with Josh Ford on a seven-yard touchdown, found Cederian Morgan for a 25-yard scoring strike and later delivered a four-yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Edwards.

Following the game, Russell credited his faith and determination for helping him remain on the field. He said he did not want to leave the contest feeling he had failed to give everything he had for his teammates.

His performance provided another confidence boost for an Alabama team looking to make a serious postseason run.

Alabama Defense Makes LSU Pay for Missed Opportunities

Although LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt put up impressive passing numbers, the Tigers struggled to finish drives against Alabama’s defense.

Leavitt completed 35 of 47 passes for 380 yards, but LSU repeatedly came up short in critical situations. The Tigers failed on all four fourth-down attempts, missed a field goal and committed a costly interception inside Alabama territory.

The Crimson Tide’s defense established its presence early.

LSU kicker Scott Starzyk missed a 56-yard field goal attempt in the first half. Alabama defensive back Chuck McDonald III then broke up a fourth-down pass from Leavitt on a fourth-and-4 opportunity at the Crimson Tide 10-yard line.

Alabama linebacker Luke Metz added another major defensive play by intercepting Leavitt at the Tide’s 24-yard line.

Those stops prevented LSU from building momentum and allowed Alabama to maintain control despite struggling offensively during the opening half.

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer praised his team’s preparation and ability to execute when the defense needed to deliver.

The Crimson Tide entered halftime with a 10-3 advantage. Conor Talty provided a field goal, while Ryan Coleman-Williams scored on a one-yard misdirection run around the right side.

Tigers Briefly Take the Lead Before Alabama Responds

LSU finally found its offensive rhythm coming out of halftime.

Dilin Jones capped an 11-play, 90-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run, giving the Tigers a brief lead. The possession included a pass interference penalty against Alabama on a fourth-and-5 situation, helping LSU keep the drive alive.

However, the Crimson Tide answered almost immediately.

On the opening play of Alabama’s next possession, Rico Scott broke free for a 57-yard reception and run to the LSU 18-yard line. Russell took advantage of the field position, connecting with Ford for a touchdown just 2:08 after LSU had taken the lead.

That response shifted the momentum back toward Alabama.

The Crimson Tide continued to capitalize on LSU’s inability to convert important opportunities, eventually creating separation on the scoreboard.

One of the most debated moments came with approximately eight minutes remaining when Kiffin elected to keep the offense on the field rather than attempt a field goal or punt on fourth-and-10 from the Alabama 25-yard line.

Leavitt was sacked, ending the possession without points. Alabama quickly turned the defensive stop into another touchdown drive, putting the game further out of reach.

Kiffin defended his decision afterward, explaining that he believed LSU needed touchdowns rather than field goals to have a realistic opportunity to win.

The Takeaway

Alabama: The Crimson Tide demonstrated why it remains a serious contender in the national championship conversation. Alabama overcame being outgained 457-285 and running 28 fewer offensive plays than LSU by protecting the football, taking advantage of scoring opportunities and delivering crucial defensive stops. The victory also continued the program’s success at Tiger Stadium, where Alabama has now won seven of its last eight appearances.

LSU: The Tigers showed flashes of offensive production behind Leavitt’s 380 passing yards, but their inability to convert fourth-down opportunities proved costly. Going 0-for-4 on fourth down, along with a missed field goal and an interception, left too many points on the field. LSU also suffered an injury concern when right tackle Weston Davis was helped off the field during the third quarter with an apparent right-leg injury.
