IRVINGTON, N.J. — Shabazz didn’t need a high-scoring offensive performance to come away with a victory Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs needed two big plays, a physical defense and the ability to survive a game in which Irvington made them earn virtually every yard.

That’s exactly what they did.

No. 19 Shabazz defeated Irvington 14-0 in a hard-fought defensive battle that featured plenty of contact, tough running, and two offenses struggling to find room against determined defenses.

Shabazz quarterback Kariem Coston provided the game’s first major breakthrough in the opening quarter, breaking loose for a 62-yard touchdown run that gave the Bulldogs an early advantage.

The play showcased Coston’s ability to turn a small opening into a game-changing play, but it would be one of the few easy moments Shabazz would have all night.

Irvington’s defense made sure of that.

The Blue Knights were physical from the opening whistle and forced Shabazz to fight for every yard. Their defensive effort prevented the Bulldogs from consistently establishing their offensive rhythm and kept Irvington within striking distance throughout the game.

Malachi Mills, Jaylin Mills, Khyan Brydie, and Jamir Howell were among the Irvington defenders who repeatedly made their presence felt.

They tackled aggressively, closed running lanes and refused to allow Shabazz to turn the game into the type of offensive showcase the Bulldogs may have expected.

But Shabazz’s defense was equally determined.

Irvington’s running game found some success moving the football, particularly between the tackles, but the Blue Knights repeatedly hurt themselves when they reached scoring territory.

Penalties and turnovers in the red zone ended promising drives and ultimately prevented Irvington from turning its offensive production into points.

That became the difference in the game.

Shabazz’s defense consistently tightened when the field became shorter, forcing Irvington to come away empty-handed despite moving the football.

Then, early in the third quarter, the Bulldogs delivered the play that gave them some breathing room.

Running back Faheem Ausbon powered his way into the end zone on a 14-yard touchdown run, extending Shabazz’s lead to 14-0.

From there, the Bulldogs’ defense took over.

Irvington continued to battle, but every possession became a test of execution. The Blue Knights moved the ball at times, only to see promising drives disappear because of mistakes in critical situations.

That’s what made the game so physical and competitive.

Shabazz had the two touchdowns it needed, but Irvington never allowed the Bulldogs to coast.

The Blue Knights’ defensive front continued to make plays, while the offense showed enough flashes in the running game to suggest that this is a team capable of making noise as the season progresses.

For Shabazz, the victory improves the Bulldogs to 4-1 and provides another example of their ability to win a low-scoring, physical football game.

For Irvington, the 4-2 record doesn’t tell the entire story.

The Blue Knights have demonstrated that they can move the football against a highly regarded Shabazz defense. Their challenge now is turning those yards into points and eliminating the costly penalties and turnovers that stalled them in the red zone.

There is plenty to like about this Irvington team.

The defense showed it can compete physically with one of the area’s better teams, while the running game demonstrated the ability to move the ball against a tough Bulldogs front.

If the Blue Knights can clean up the mistakes that cost them scoring opportunities, they could become a prominent opponent down the road.

On this sunny day, however, Shabazz made the plays that mattered most.

Coston’s 62-yard burst.

Ausbon’s 14-yard power run.

And a defense that refused to surrender a single point.

In a game where every yard came with a price, those two touchdowns were enough to give Shabazz the victory.
