Washington, DC — Spain made its opportunities count early and relied on a crucial second-half penalty save to secure a 2-0 victory over the United States on Saturday, winning a matchup between the top two teams in women’s international soccer.

Patri Guijarro opened the scoring in the third minute with a spectacular long-range strike, and Eva Navarro doubled Spain’s advantage before the 14-minute mark. Goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares then delivered a pivotal performance after halftime, stopping Lily Yohannes’ penalty kick to preserve the shutout.

The contest brought together the reigning Women’s World Cup champions from Spain and the United States, which claimed Olympic gold. The national teams have also combined to win the last three Women’s World Cup titles, adding significance to the first of their two scheduled meetings.

The sides will meet again Tuesday night near Philadelphia, giving the Americans an opportunity to respond after a difficult start against Spain’s attack.

Saturday’s match offered an early glimpse of a potential rivalry to watch ahead of next year’s World Cup, although both teams were missing prominent players. Spain was without three-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí, while the United States lacked defenders Naomi Girma and Emily Sonnett.

Spain Takes Control Early

The Americans struggled to settle defensively in the opening minutes, and Guijarro made them pay almost immediately. Receiving an opportunity from outside the penalty area, the Spanish midfielder unleashed a powerful shot that beat U.S. goalkeeper Claudia Dickey to put Spain ahead 1-0.

Spain continued to press, and its second goal exposed another gap in the American defense. Salma Paralluelo delivered a cross from the left side, finding Navarro unmarked in front of goal. Navarro connected with a volley to push the Spanish advantage to 2-0 before the United States could establish its rhythm.

Despite falling behind early, the Americans created opportunities to get back into the match.

Alyssa Thompson maneuvered around Nanclares and appeared to have a promising scoring chance, but a Spanish defender recovered in time to block her attempt. Nanclares followed with another outstanding intervention, redirecting Sophia Wilson’s long-range effort onto the crossbar.

Those saves allowed Spain to carry its two-goal advantage into halftime.

U.S. Pushes Back After the Break

The American attack showed greater urgency in the second half, with Trinity Rodman becoming more influential on the left flank. The United States found additional openings and applied pressure as it searched for a way back into the contest.

Wilson appeared to pull a goal back after a sequence involving Rodman, but a video review ruled the effort offside, denying the Americans a breakthrough.

The United States received another opportunity when video assistant referee review resulted in a penalty kick. Yohannes stepped up with a chance to cut Spain’s lead in half, but her low attempt toward the left side was stopped by Nanclares, who dove across goal to make the save.

That moment proved decisive. With the penalty denied, Spain maintained its two-goal cushion and saw out the remainder of the match to claim the victory.

Another Test Awaits

For Spain, the result demonstrated the value of an aggressive opening and disciplined goalkeeping when the opposition began to build momentum. Guijarro and Navarro provided the early scoring, while Nanclares ensured the United States could not turn its second-half pressure into goals.

The Americans, meanwhile, will look to correct their defensive lapses and make better use of their scoring opportunities in Tuesday’s rematch near Philadelphia.

With two of the world’s leading women’s national teams facing each other twice in quick succession, the next meeting offers the United States a chance to make adjustments and deliver a stronger performance.
