TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa delivered its most complete performance of the young season Saturday night, combining an efficient offense with a suffocating defensive effort to shut out East Texas A&M 42-0 at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
The victory moved the Golden Hurricane to 3-0 for the first time since 2008 while giving the program its first shutout in nearly 24 years. Tulsa’s last shutout came on Oct. 26, 2002, when the Golden Hurricane blanked UTEP 20-0.
Quarterback Dexter Williams II directed the offense with 164 passing yards and three touchdowns, completing 14 of 26 attempts without an interception. Tulsa finished with 450 total yards, including 286 on the ground.
The Golden Hurricane established control early.
Williams II opened the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Oran Singleton, capping Tulsa’s opening scoring drive and putting the Golden Hurricane ahead 7-0.
Tulsa extended the advantage early in the second quarter when Williams II found Donnell Gee Jr. for a 24-yard touchdown. The five-play, 67-yard drive pushed the lead to 14-0 and gave Tulsa momentum heading into halftime.
East Texas A&M had opportunities to answer but repeatedly came up empty.
The Lions moved into Tulsa territory on multiple occasions, including a drive that reached the Golden Hurricane 17-yard line. Tulsa’s defense stood its ground, stopping Major McBride for no gain on fourth-and-1 to end the threat.
That defensive stand became part of a dominant night for Tulsa’s defense.
The Golden Hurricane forced seven punts, stopped East Texas A&M on three fourth-down attempts, and recorded an interception. Tulsa also held the Lions without a touchdown despite allowing 288 total yards.
Chris Thompson Jr. led Tulsa with eight tackles, while Zane Woodham, Sam Stone and Thomas Davis each recorded a sack. Carter Langenderfer added an interception.
Tulsa then delivered the knockout blow to open the second half.
Trequan Jones took the opening kickoff of the third quarter 98 yards for a touchdown, racing untouched into the end zone and sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The return pushed the Golden Hurricane’s lead to 21-0 just 11 seconds into the second half.
Tulsa continued to pile on.
Damari Alston capped an eight-play, 74-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter, making it 28-0.
Williams II added his third touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, connecting with Jackson Shockley on a 22-yard scoring strike to complete a nine-play, 64-yard drive.
With the outcome no longer in doubt, Seth Davis provided the final exclamation point. Davis broke through for a 51-yard touchdown run with 1:49 remaining, completing the scoring at 42-0.
Davis finished with 90 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, while Alston added 68 rushing yards and a score. Tulsa’s 286 rushing yards were more than double East Texas A&M’s 125.
East Texas A&M struggled to generate consistent offense throughout the night. Major McBride led the Lions with 53 rushing yards on 10 carries, while Quay Middlebrooks added 49 yards on 10 attempts.
Despite holding the ball for 30:18, East Texas A&M could not find the end zone and finished 0-for-3 on fourth-down attempts.
For Tulsa, the victory represented more than another win on the schedule. The Golden Hurricane showed balance on offense, created turnovers and fourth-down stops on defense, and closed out the night with a historic shutout.
Tulsa now turns its attention to its next challenge on the road.
