Houston, TX — The Houston Gamblers kept themselves in the playoff conversation Sunday, grinding out a 17-13 win over the Columbus Aviators at Shell Energy Stadium as the season reached its midpoint.

Houston (2-3) set the tone early with a methodical opening drive. Quarterback Nolan Henderson connected with Lawrence Keys III for a 21-yard gain to spark the possession, which ended with running back Jalen White punching in a short touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.

The Gamblers extended their advantage in the second quarter when Henderson capped another long drive with a five-yard rushing score, pushing the margin to 14-0. Columbus (1-4) responded with a drive of its own, highlighted by a 21-yard pass from Jalan McClendon to Antwane Wells before McClendon finished it off with a quarterback sneak to cut the deficit in half.

Houston nearly added more before halftime in a strange sequence. Kicker John Hoyland drilled a 56-yard field goal, but a timeout negated the play. On the retry, he missed. That miscue gave Columbus an opening, and the Aviators took advantage. Toa Taua scored on a short run late in the half, though a missed extra point left Houston clinging to a 14-13 lead at the break.

The third quarter turned into a defensive battle, with neither side able to generate points. Both teams struggled to sustain drives, and the score remained unchanged heading into the final period.

Houston finally created separation early in the fourth when Hoyland converted a 23-yard field goal to make it 17-13 after a steady 10-play drive. Columbus threatened to answer, driving all the way to the one-yard line, but the Gamblers’ defense came up with a critical stop. Kenny Dyson sacked McClendon on third down, and a missed field goal attempt kept Houston in front.

The Aviators had another chance late, but a costly turnover sealed their fate. As McClendon scrambled upfield, linebacker Eugene Asante knocked the ball loose, and Houston recovered to regain possession.

Columbus mounted one final drive in the closing seconds, but a desperate lateral play on the game’s final snap ended with Houston recovering the ball to secure the victory.

Henderson finished 13 of 25 for 146 yards and added a rushing touchdown, while White led the ground game with a score of his own. Keys III was a top target, helping move the chains throughout the afternoon.

For Columbus, McClendon completed 14 of 21 passes for 141 yards and accounted for a touchdown on the ground. Taua also found the end zone, but missed opportunities—including two failed kicks—proved costly.

With the win, Houston keeps its postseason hopes alive heading into the second half of the season. The two teams will meet again next Friday night in Columbus for a quick rematch.
