Philadelphia, PA — Croatia punched its ticket to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ghana on Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field, using a late goal to cap an entertaining Group L finale.

Needing a victory to guarantee advancement, Croatia delivered when it mattered most as Nikola Vlašić headed home the decisive goal in the 83rd minute, sending the 2018 World Cup finalists into the Round of 32.

Croatia dictated much of the first half and was rewarded in the 31st minute when Petar Sučić unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area that beat Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi to give his side a 1-0 advantage.

Despite trailing, Ghana remained composed and gradually increased the pressure after halftime. Their persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when defender Derrick Luckassen scored on a set piece. Following an extended VAR review, the goal was confirmed, leveling the match at 1-1 and briefly shifting momentum toward the Black Stars.

Croatia refused to settle.

Just 10 minutes after Ghana’s equalizer, veteran midfielder Luka Modrić delivered a perfectly placed corner kick into the penalty area, where Vlašić rose above the defense to head home the match-winning goal, restoring Croatia’s lead with only minutes remaining.

The Croatian defense stood firm during the closing stages, denying Ghana any opportunity to force another equalizer and preserving the crucial victory.

The result secured second place in Group L for Croatia behind England, who defeated Panama 2-0. Ghana also advanced to the knockout rounds as one of the tournament’s best third-place finishers, marking the nation’s first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage since 2010.

Croatia’s experienced core once again proved invaluable, with 40-year-old captain Luka Modrić orchestrating the midfield and providing the decisive assist. His leadership and composure helped Croatia navigate one of its toughest tests of the group stage.

For Ghana, the loss was disappointing, but not devastating. The Black Stars showed resilience after falling behind and battled back to equalize before Croatia found the late breakthrough. Ghana now shifts its attention to the knockout stage, where every match becomes a win-or-go-home affair.

Croatia, meanwhile, enters the Round of 32 carrying momentum after overcoming early tournament adversity. Following an opening loss to England and a narrow victory over Panama, Zlatko Dalić’s squad finished the group stage with consecutive positive results and renewed confidence.

In front of a lively Philadelphia crowd, Croatia demonstrated the poise and championship experience that has defined the nation’s recent World Cup runs. With the knockout rounds beginning next week, the Croatians will hope Saturday’s dramatic victory serves as the spark for another deep tournament run.
