Philadelphia, Pa—-Ivory Coast delivered a commanding 2-0 victory over Curaçao in their final group match to secure a spot in the World Cup knockout stage. The win marks a milestone for the Elephants, who had never previously progressed beyond the first round.

In Philadelphia, Faé’s team made an early breakthrough. Within just seven minutes, a momentary lapse from the Caribbean defense opened the door for Diomandé, who teed up Nicolas Pépé. The Villarreal forward raced into position and finished first-time with a composed side-foot to make it 1-0.

Curaçao looked to respond quickly and did not have to wait long. Chong tested Fofana for the first time, but the goalkeeper produced a steady stop. At the other end, Ivory Coast continued to threaten, with Diallo going close on multiple occasions—first seeing a narrow miss, then being denied by a critical defensive intervention.

Pepé seals the result

As the contest went on, Curaçao grew increasingly uncomfortable as Ivory Coast pressed for a second goal. Chances came and went for Gaari, Chong, and Bacuna, but the equalizer never arrived.

After the interval, Ivory Coast upped the intensity again. Although Kessié came close, it was Sangaré who delivered the decisive moment in the 64th minute. He threaded a brilliant pass through the defense and Pépé completed his second, finishing for his brace and effectively ending the contest.

Late pressure, but no comeback

In the closing stages, Curaçao tried to reduce the deficit through Floranus, Noslin—who threatened with a promising long-range effort—and Chong. However, Fofana remained firm, preserving the clean sheet as Ivory Coast comfortably saw out the remaining minutes.

With the win, Ivory Coast claimed qualification for the round of 32, finishing behind group winners Germany. Their next opponents will be determined as the draw sets them up to face either France or Norway.
