Newark, NJ—-In a result few expected, Sean Strickland once again climbed to the top of the UFC middleweight division Saturday night, defeating Khamzat Chimaev by split decision in the main event of UFC 328 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Nearly three years after shocking the MMA world with his upset victory to first capture the middleweight championship, Strickland delivered another unforgettable performance — this time Iagainst one of the sport’s most intimidating and dominant competitors.
Entering the fight undefeated and widely viewed as one of the UFC’s most dangerous fighters, Chimaev appeared poised to continue his rise through the division. Instead, Strickland frustrated the champion for five rounds with relentless pressure, disciplined takedown defense, and his signature jab-heavy striking attack.
The fight unfolded as a tactical war. Chimaev repeatedly looked for openings to impose his wrestling and grappling, but Strickland consistently denied takedown attempts and even reversed several clinch and ground exchanges. On the feet, Strickland’s volume and pacing gradually wore down the previously unbeaten champion.
By the championship rounds, Strickland’s confidence continued to grow as he controlled the distance and landed clean combinations while neutralizing many of Chimaev’s most dangerous weapons.
When the final horn sounded, the crowd inside Prudential Center waited anxiously for the judges’ scorecards. Bruce Buffer’s announcement confirmed the upset as Strickland earned the split-decision victory with scores of 48-47, 47-48, and 48-47 to become the undisputed UFC middleweight champion once again.
Despite the animosity leading into the fight, both fighters showed respect once the battle concluded. Chimaev placed the championship belt around Strickland’s waist following the decision, while the newly crowned champion used his post-fight interview to acknowledge the negativity surrounding the promotion of the fight.
The fight capped an emotionally charged week between the two fighters. Tensions escalated throughout the buildup with repeated verbal exchanges, personal insults, and heated confrontations during fight week appearances. The hostility even spilled into Thursday’s ceremonial faceoff when Chimaev landed an unsportsmanlike kick that intensified anticipation for the championship clash.
Strickland admitted he regretted some of the comments made during the buildup and expressed respect for the fans and the sport after reclaiming the title.
For Chimaev, the loss marked the first defeat of his professional career and may signal significant changes moving forward. Questions surrounding his future at middleweight intensified after another difficult weight cut during fight week, leading many to speculate that his long-term future could lie in another division.
As for Strickland, the victory adds another improbable chapter to one of the UFC’s most unexpected championship careers. Once doubted as a legitimate title contender, he now finds himself once again standing atop the middleweight division after defeating another elite opponent on one of the biggest stages in the sport.
