East Rutherford, NJ—–The New York Giants enter the 2026 season with renewed optimism. The arrival of head coach John Harbaugh has brought a culture of accountability, toughness, and physical football to East Rutherford. Harbaugh’s first offseason has already reshaped the roster with impact draft picks, veteran additions, and a renewed emphasis on winning at the line of scrimmage.

As Organized Team Activities (OTAs) continue, several key players have an opportunity to set the tone for what could become a pivotal season for the franchise.

Arvell Reese Must Show He Can Be an Immediate Difference-Maker

First-round linebacker Arvell Reese has already impressed coaches with his athleticism, versatility, and ability to impact multiple phases of the defense. Early OTA reports have highlighted his coverage ability, pass-rush potential, and physical presence.

For Reese, the next step is consistency and was putting on a show in today’s practice, breaking up a few passes across the middle.

The Giants drafted him to be more than just another linebacker. They envision him as a movable chess piece who can rush the passer, drop into coverage, and create confusion for opposing offenses. During OTAs, Reese must continue mastering defensive assignments and communication responsibilities while proving he can process NFL offenses at full speed. Also, Reese has Tremaine Edmunds to lean and so far during OTA’s, they have been causing havoc for the offensive linemen.

If he develops quickly, New York’s defense could field one of the league’s most dynamic front sevens.

Colton Hood Needs to Accelerate His Development

Second-round cornerback Colton Hood has spent much of the spring working with the second-team defense while flashing playmaking ability. Coaches have already noted several strong reps and promising moments.

The challenge for Hood is earning trust.

OTAs are about demonstrating discipline, route recognition, and communication within the secondary. The rookie possesses the physical tools to become a starter, but he must show that he can handle NFL route combinations and avoid the mental mistakes that often plague young defensive backs.

The faster Hood develops, the more flexibility defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson will have when building coverage packages this season.

Odell Beckham Jr. Must Become More Than a Receiver

The return of Odell Beckham Jr. has generated excitement throughout the fan base. While Beckham may no longer be the explosive player who electrified MetLife Stadium a decade ago, he can still play an important role in Harbaugh’s offense.

During OTAs, Beckham’s greatest value may come as a mentor.

The Giants have several young receivers who can benefit from his experience. Beckham needs to establish chemistry with the quarterbacks, demonstrate reliable route-running, and show he can consistently win in short and intermediate areas of the field and so far, he is true to form. Caught a few hitches today across the middle looked good coming out of his breaks.

Most importantly, he must stay healthy. If Beckham can provide veteran leadership while contributing situationally on game days, his return could prove to be one of the off-season’s most important moves.

JuJu Smith-Schuster Must Prove He Still Has Plenty Left

Newly acquired veteran receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster enters OTAs with something to prove.

The Giants signed Smith-Schuster because of his experience, football intelligence, blocking ability, and familiarity with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s system. Analysts have noted that while he may no longer be an elite downfield threat, he remains a savvy route-runner who can move the chains and contribute in physical offensive schemes.

For Smith-Schuster, OTAs are about demonstrating reliability.

He needs to establish timing with the quarterbacks, show he can create separation underneath, and embrace the physical blocking responsibilities that Harbaugh’s offense demands. If he excels in those areas, he could become a valuable third-down weapon and locker-room leader. He looked good catching the ball and turning up the field. He is starting to settle down in the offense, and he is going to pose a problem against opposing defenses.

Francis Mauigoa Could Transform the Offensive Line

Few Giants players may have a larger impact on the 2026 season than rookie offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa.

Selected in the first round, Mauigoa was drafted to bring size, strength, and physicality to a unit that has struggled with consistency in recent years. Coaches have already praised his work ethic and willingness to refine his technique during OTA drills. His athleticism has also stood out when executing movement-based blocking assignments.

For Mauigoa, the focus must be on refining technique.

NFL defenders are faster and more sophisticated than anything he faced in college. Improving hand placement, footwork, leverage, and communication with fellow linemen will be essential throughout the summer.

If he develops as expected, the Giants may finally have the foundational offensive lineman they have been searching for. It is just too early to tell since everyone is running around in shorts, but he is getting reps with the first team.

The Offensive Line Must Become the Identity of the Team

No position group carries greater responsibility entering the season than the offensive line.

Under Harbaugh, winning in the trenches will be non-negotiable. The Giants cannot afford another season of inconsistent pass protection and ineffective run blocking.

As a unit, the offensive line must:

  • Improve communication and pre-snap recognition.
  • Eliminate assignment breakdowns.
  • Develop chemistry through repetition.
  • Create movement in the running game.
  • Protect the quarterback with greater consistency.

Harbaugh’s best teams have always been physical, disciplined, and fundamentally sound. The Giants are attempting to build that same identity and they are starting to gel but just have to wait and see when training camp starts.

If Mauigoa develops quickly, veterans stay healthy, and the unit embraces Harbaugh’s philosophy, the offensive line could become one of the most improved groups on the roster.

Final Thoughts

OTAs are only the beginning, but they are laying the foundation for the John Harbaugh era in New York.

Arvell Reese and Colton Hood must accelerate their development as rookies. Odell Beckham Jr. and JuJu Smith-Schuster need to provide leadership and dependable production. Francis Mauigoa has to prove he is ready to anchor the offensive front.

Most importantly, the entire offensive line must become tougher, smarter, and more cohesive.

If those objectives are achieved, the Giants could enter the 2026 season as one of the NFL’s most intriguing turnaround candidates.
