Piscataway, NJ—Rutgers women’s basketball delivered an impressive performance Friday night, overwhelming Caldwell 104-49 in an exhibition matchup at Jersey Mike’s Arena. The Scarlet Knights controlled the game from the opening minutes, using an explosive offense, relentless defensive pressure, and contributions throughout the roster to earn a convincing victory.

Freshman Chikae Desdunes made an immediate impression, leading all scorers with 17 points while connecting on five three-pointers from downtown. She also recorded 10 steals, producing a remarkable all-around performance. Tara Daye and Jaylah Lampley each posted double-doubles, with Daye finishing with 16 points and 10 boards and Lampley adding 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Mia Pauldo made her return to New Jersey count, contributing 11 points and five assists. Lauryn Swann also reached double figures with 10 points as Rutgers showcased the offensive depth that could become a major strength this season.

The Scarlet Knights wasted little time establishing control. Rutgers exploded for 32 points in the opening quarter and built a 19-point advantage. Desdunes provided an early offensive spark off the bench, knocking down four three-pointers during the first period. Rutgers’ reserves made a significant impact throughout the night, combining for 53 points compared with 29 from Caldwell’s bench.

Rutgers continued to dictate the tempo in the second quarter, adding 20 points while limiting the Cougars to 11. The Scarlet Knights carried a commanding 52-24 lead into the locker room, with their defensive pressure creating turnovers and opportunities to attack in transition.

The offensive production continued after halftime. Rutgers poured in 29 points in the third quarter before adding another 23 in the final period to complete the 55-point victory.

Head coach Gary Redus II used the exhibition to evaluate different combinations, giving his team an opportunity to demonstrate its versatility. With multiple players capable of contributing at different positions, Rutgers showed the potential to mix and match lineups. Redus appeared pleased with the energy and effort his players brought to the floor.

Defensively, Rutgers created problems for Caldwell throughout the contest. The Scarlet Knights forced 31 turnovers and collected 23 steals, converting those mistakes into 39 points. They also dominated the rebounding battle, finishing with a 49-28 advantage, including 19 offensive rebounds.

Rutgers’ speed was another difference-maker. The Scarlet Knights repeatedly pushed the ball up the floor, finishing with 39 fast-break points while holding Caldwell to just one.

The numbers reflected Rutgers’ offensive efficiency. The Scarlet Knights shot 53.1 percent from the field, making 34 of 64 attempts, and connected on 11 of 22 shots from beyond the three-point line. Caldwell struggled to find its rhythm, shooting just 26.5 percent (13 of 49).

Caldwell was led by Jessaiah Reynoso of Passaic, NJ with 9 points.

Friday’s performance offered an encouraging preview of what Rutgers hopes to accomplish under Redus in his first season leading the program. The Scarlet Knights displayed scoring balance, defensive intensity, rebounding strength and the ability to play at a fast pace.

Rutgers now turns its attention to the regular season. The Scarlet Knights officially begin the 2026-27 campaign and the Gary Redus II era Monday, Nov. 2, when they welcome LIU to Jersey Mike’s Arena for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
